Kentucky Electrician License Requirements (2026)
By Gabriel Giner, Editor · Reviewed 2026-05-06 · CLR Editorial Review Desk
The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC) Electrical Division licenses electricians and electrical contractors statewide under KRS Chapter 227A. Kentucky issues three individual credentials — Electrician (employee), Electrical Contractor (business), and Master Electrician (the qualifying individual who supervises electrical work) — and one business credential, the Electrical Contractor license. To work as a self-employed electrical contracting business in Kentucky, the qualifying individual must hold a Kentucky Master Electrician license, and the business must hold an Electrical Contractor license backed by a bond and liability insurance.
Regulatory Body Profile
Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction (HBC) is the statutory authority responsible for issuing and enforcing this license under KRS 227A (Electrical), KRS 198B.650 (HVAC); 815 KAR licensing chapters. Kentucky HBC licenses electrical contractors and electricians, HVAC mechanics and master contractors, and enforces the Kentucky Building Code and Kentucky Residential Code statewide.

The Eligibility Audit
The applicant must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Social Security Number. No Kentucky residency requirement.
Good moral character
HBC conducts a fitness review on every Master Electrician applicant. Felony convictions and prior license revocations are reviewed individually.
Background investigation
Mandatory criminal history disclosure on the application; HBC may request additional documentation including court records.
Experience and Education Standards
At least six years (12,000 hours) of practical electrical experience under the direct supervision of a Kentucky Master Electrician or equivalent licensed master electrician in another state has to be evidenced and confirmed. Retain payroll, tax, project, or supervisor records, since the board may audit the experience claimed.
Accepted proof of experience or eligibility
- HBC Electrical Experience Verification Form signed by each licensed Master Electrician supervisor
- W-2 statements, pay stubs, or 1099 records covering the qualifying period
- Approved electrical apprenticeship completion certificate (where applicable)
- College transcripts for any claimed education substitution
Education substitution
Completion of an approved four-year electrical apprenticeship and accredited electrical engineering technology coursework substitute for portions of the experience requirement on a sliding scale set by HBC rule.
The Exam Syllabus
PSI Services LLC (under contract to Kentucky HBC) administers the required examination. Each part below must be passed before the license will issue:
- Kentucky Master Electrician Examination — National Electrical Code, Kentucky electrical rules, business and law — 100 questions, 300 minutes, passing score 75%
Examination fee: $80 examination fee paid to PSI on the day of testing.
Retake policy: Failed examinations may be re-taken by paying a new $80 fee. There is no waiting period between attempts. Each application remains valid for one year.
Bonding, Insurance & Financial Security
The applicant must secure and file a $5,000 surety bond before the HBC will release the license.
General liability
Kentucky HBC requires Electrical Contractors to carry general liability insurance with a minimum of $500,000 single limit at the time of contractor licensure. Most commercial owners contractually require $1,000,000/$2,000,000.
Workers' compensation
Workers compensation insurance is mandatory in Kentucky under KRS 342 for any business with one or more employees, including part-time.
Additional financial requirements
No HBC net worth requirement. The $5,000 surety bond and the general liability insurance certificate are the financial responsibility evidence required at electrical contractor licensure.
Schedule of Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application (non-refundable) | $100 |
| Examination | $80 |
| Initial license — sole owner | $100 |
| Initial license — non-sole owner | $250 |
| Renewal (every year) | $250 |
Renewal and Continuing Obligations
The Kentucky Master Electrician (and Electrical Contractor) runs on a year renewal cycle. The current renewal fee is $250. Kentucky Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor licenses renew every year. A lapsed Master credential automatically suspends the contractor license that depends on it.
Continuing education: HBC-approved continuing education in National Electrical Code updates and Kentucky electrical rules each annual renewal cycle.

For this classification, Kentucky does not recognize the NASCLA Accredited Examination.
| Reciprocal State | Accepted Exam | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Tennessee | Trade exam waived | Bilateral Kentucky HBC–Tennessee Department of Commerce reciprocity for active master electricians in good standing. |
| West Virginia | Trade exam waived | Bilateral Kentucky HBC–West Virginia State Fire Marshal reciprocity. |
| Ohio | Trade exam waived | Bilateral Kentucky HBC–Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board reciprocity for active electrical contractors. |
| North Carolina | Trade exam waived | Bilateral Kentucky HBC–NCBEEC reciprocity for active master electricians. |
| Virginia | Trade exam waived | Bilateral Kentucky HBC–Virginia DPOR reciprocity. |
Kentucky maintains some of the broadest electrical reciprocity in the region. Reciprocal applicants still must complete the Kentucky application, pay the application fee, and meet bond and insurance requirements before operating as an Electrical Contractor.
Weighing more than one jurisdiction? The national hub compares Electrician license requirements in every state — exam, bond, fee, and experience thresholds side by side.
The Application Roadmap
- Document six years of electrical experience. 12,000 hours under a licensed Master Electrician. An approved four-year apprenticeship counts toward the requirement.
- Submit the HBC Master Electrician application. File with the application fee, experience verification forms, and supporting documentation.
- Receive HBC approval to test. HBC reviews the application and issues a PSI authorization to test letter, typically within 4 to 8 weeks.
- Pass the PSI Master Electrician examination at 75%. Score 75% or better on the 100-question, five-hour exam covering the NEC, Kentucky electrical rules, and business and law.
- Receive the Master Electrician license. HBC issues the Master Electrician license after the exam is passed. The license must be renewed annually.
- Apply for the Electrical Contractor license (if self-employed). File a separate Electrical Contractor application with the Master Electrician designation, $5,000 surety bond, and certificate of general liability insurance.
- Maintain the credentials annually. Renew the Master Electrician license and Electrical Contractor license each year and complete the required continuing education.

Where Applications Stall
These are the recurring mistakes that most often delay or reject a Kentucky Electrician application, based on the official instructions cited here.
Underestimating the 75% pass score
Kentucky uses a 75% pass score on the Master Electrician exam, higher than the 70% used in many neighboring states. The exam runs five hours and includes heavy NEC calculation work.
Confusing the Electrician credential with the Electrical Contractor license
Holding the Master Electrician credential alone does not authorize self-employed contracting. A separate Electrical Contractor license, $5,000 bond, and liability insurance are required.
Missing the workers compensation threshold
Kentucky requires workers compensation for any business with one or more employees including part-time. The threshold is stricter than most neighboring states.
Letting the bond lapse
A lapsed surety bond automatically suspends the Electrical Contractor license. HBC monitors bond status through the surety carrier.
Studying the wrong NEC edition
Kentucky adopts the NEC on a delayed cycle through HBC rulemaking. Confirm the current adopted edition before purchasing study materials.
