How licensing works in Nebraska
Nebraska is not a one-size-fits-all licensing market. Across the 14 guides currently live on this state hub, 11 require a formal trade examination and 2 require a surety bond before the credential can issue. 13 of the published entries rely on city, county, or municipal registration rather than a single statewide credential, so contractors need to confirm the local building department or business-license office before bidding work.
The point of this state page is to give you a fast read on the regulatory model before you dive into a specific trade. Start with the trades grid below if you already know your specialty. If you are comparing jurisdictions, use the cost calculator for first-year cost and the reciprocity matrix for license portability.
Main boards and agencies
-
Nebraska Department of Labor — Contractor Registration
Nebraska issues no state contractor or swimming-pool-construction license. At the state level the Contractor Registration Act controls: any contractor building pools must register with NDOL (registration, not licensure). Public-pool construction plan review is handled separately by the Department of Water, Energy and Environment (DWEE) under Title 178; residential pool construction is governed by local building permits.

Nebraska Secretary of State, Licensing Division
The Nebraska Secretary of State's Licensing Division administers the mandatory statewide registration of home inspectors. Beginning January 1, 2023, a home inspector must register with the Division before conducting a home inspection in Nebraska. The office maintains the public registry and collects the registration fee and insurance certificate; it does not test competency, set education standards, or issue a traditional competency-based license. Rules are administered under Secretary of State Title 433, Chapter 9.
