Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler License Requirements (2026)
By Gabriel Giner, Editor · Reviewed 2026-05-29 · CLR Editorial Review Desk
The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal (OSFM), an independent agency under the Oklahoma Fire Marshal Commission, licenses fire sprinkler contractors and Responsible Managing Employees (RMEs) under 74 O.S. §324.1 et seq. and OAC 265:25. Oklahoma issues a single statewide Fire Sprinkler Contractor license plus separate Journeyman Fitter and Apprentice Fitter certifications. OSFM adopts NFPA 13, 13R, and 13D by reference through the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission and the Oklahoma Fire Code (OAC 265:25-3).
Regulatory Body Profile
Authority over this credential rests with Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB), which issues and polices it under Oklahoma Statutes Title 59 §1000 et seq. (plumbing) and §1680 et seq. (electrical and mechanical/HVAC). The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board licenses individual journeymen and contractors for the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical (HVAC/refrigeration) trades statewide, administers PSI examinations, and conducts disciplinary proceedings. Oklahoma has no statewide general contractor license — general contracting is regulated by individual cities.

The Eligibility Audit
Eligibility begins with two baseline checks: the applicant must be 18 or older and must provide a valid Social Security Number. No Oklahoma residency requirement; out-of-state applicants must designate a registered agent.
Good moral character
OSFM reviews each applicant for fitness. Prior disciplinary action in any jurisdiction must be disclosed.
Background investigation
OSBI criminal history background check required at initial licensure for the RME.
Experience and Education Standards
A minimum of four years of practical fire sprinkler installation experience under a licensed Oklahoma fire sprinkler contractor, or equivalent out-of-state experience verified by OSFM must be documented and verified. Unless the board publishes a different lookback period, applicants should keep payroll, tax, project, or supervisor records that support the claimed experience.
Accepted proof of experience or eligibility
- OSFM Experience Verification Form signed by each prior licensed fire sprinkler contractor employer
- W-2 statements, pay stubs, or 1099 records covering the qualifying period
- NICET Automatic Sprinkler System Layout certification card (Level III minimum for the RME)
Education substitution
NICET ASSL Level III in Automatic Sprinkler System Layout satisfies the technical competence portion of the experience requirement. A registered sprinkler fitter apprenticeship is accepted in full.
The Exam Syllabus
The exam, administered by Oklahoma State Fire Marshal (administered through PSI Services LLC), breaks into the parts shown below — all must be passed before licensure:
- Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler Contractor Examination — NFPA 13, NFPA 25, hydraulic calculations, Oklahoma Fire Code, business and law — 100 questions, 240 minutes, passing score 75%
Examination fee: $100 examination fee paid to PSI on the day of testing.
Retake policy: Failed examinations may be retaken after a 30-day waiting period upon paying a new $100 fee.
Bonding, Insurance & Financial Security
A $5,000 surety bond, in the form prescribed by the CIB, must be posted as a condition of licensure.
General liability
74 O.S. §324.6 requires general liability insurance of at least $300,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate with OSFM named as certificate holder.
Workers' compensation
Workers' compensation coverage is mandatory under 85A O.S. §36 for any contractor with one or more employees.
Additional financial requirements
No net-worth requirement, but the $5,000 surety bond must be filed with OSFM before the license is issued.
Schedule of Fees
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application (non-refundable) | $250 |
| Examination | $100 |
| Initial license | $250 |
| Renewal (every year) | $250 |
Renewal and Continuing Obligations
The Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler Contractor License (OSFM) runs on a year renewal cycle. The current renewal fee is $250. Oklahoma fire sprinkler contractor licenses renew annually on June 30. The RME must remain actively employed by the licensed contractor.
Continuing education: Continued NICET certification with CPDs every three years satisfies the OSFM technical CE requirement.

Oklahoma does not maintain bilateral fire sprinkler reciprocity. NICET ASSL certification is the universal technical credential and accelerates the experience review.

The Application Roadmap
- Log four years of fire sprinkler installation experience. Document four years under a licensed fire sprinkler contractor covering NFPA 13 installation work.
- Earn NICET Automatic Sprinkler System Layout Level III. NICET ASSL Level III is the minimum OSFM technical credential for the RME designation.
- Submit OSBI background check. Fingerprint-based criminal history clearance is required for the RME at initial licensure.
- File the OSFM Fire Sprinkler Contractor application. Submit the application with NICET card, experience affidavits, $5,000 surety bond, insurance certificates, and the $250 application fee.
- Pass the PSI Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler Contractor exam at 75%. Score 75% or better on the 100-question exam covering NFPA 13, NFPA 25, hydraulics, Oklahoma Fire Code, and business and law.
- File $5,000 surety bond and certificates of insurance. Submit the bond, $300,000 general liability certificate, and workers compensation proof to OSFM.
- Receive the Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler Contractor license. OSFM issues the license within 30 days of receiving a complete application and passing exam score.
- Submit each installation for plan review and acceptance testing. Every commercial sprinkler installation requires sealed plans reviewed by OSFM or the local AHJ under the Oklahoma Fire Code.
Where Applications Stall
The following pitfalls summarize the issues most likely to delay, return, or derail a Oklahoma Fire Sprinkler application based on the published board instructions and source materials cited on this page.
Applying without NICET Level III
OSFM will not issue the contractor license unless the RME holds NICET Automatic Sprinkler System Layout Level III.
Filing the bond late
The $5,000 surety bond must be on file with OSFM before the license is issued. OSFM will not back-date.
Skipping OSBI background check
Fingerprint-based background clearance is mandatory for the RME and is often the slowest step.
Losing the RME
If the RME leaves employment, the contractor has 30 days to designate a replacement or the license is suspended.
Missing the June 30 renewal deadline
OSFM licenses expire on June 30 annually. A lapsed license requires reapplication and re-examination.
