Louisiana Plumber License Requirements (2026)
By Gabriel Giner, Editor · Reviewed 2026-05-15 · CLR Editorial Review Desk
Louisiana is one of the few states that splits plumbing licensure between two regulators. The Louisiana State Plumbing Board (LSPB) licenses individual plumbers under La. R.S. 37:1361 et seq. and issues three credentials: Apprentice Plumber (registration only), Journeyman Plumber (after 5,000 hours of supervised apprenticeship plus the journeyman examination), and Master Plumber (after at least two years as a Journeyman plus the master examination). Separately, the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) issues a Plumbing Work Specialty contractor license under La. R.S. 37:2150 et seq. for any plumbing business that contracts commercial projects of $50,000 or more or residential projects of $75,000 or more. To run a self-employed plumbing business in Louisiana you typically need both: an LSPB Master Plumber credential as the qualifying individual and an LSLBC Plumbing Work contractor license for the business.
Governing Authority
Under La. R.S. 37:1361 et seq.; LAC Title 46:LV (LSPB rules), Louisiana State Plumbing Board (LSPB) is the body that issues this license and enforces compliance with it. LSPB licenses individual apprentice, journeyman, and master plumbers statewide, administers plumbing examinations, and enforces the Louisiana State Plumbing Code under La. R.S. 37:1361 et seq.

Eligibility Requirements
At a minimum the applicant has to be 18 years old and supply a valid Social Security Number. No Louisiana residency requirement.
Good moral character
LSPB conducts a fitness review on every applicant. Felony convictions are reviewed individually by the Board.
Background investigation
Mandatory criminal history disclosure on the application.
Experience & Education Matrix
Eligibility requires 5 years of apprentice plumbers must complete 5,000 hours (approximately four years) of supervised plumbing work to sit for the Journeyman Plumber examination; Journeymen must hold the credential at least two additional years to sit for the Master Plumber examination, documented and independently verifiable. Payroll, tax, project, and supervisor records are the usual proof the board will accept.
Accepted proof of experience or eligibility
- LSPB Apprentice Registration with hour logs maintained throughout the apprenticeship
- Affidavits from supervising Master Plumbers verifying the 5,000 hours
- W-2 statements, pay stubs, or 1099 records covering the apprenticeship and journey-level periods
- Approved plumbing apprenticeship completion certificate
Education substitution
Up to 1,000 of the required 5,000 apprentice hours may be substituted by completion of an LSPB-approved plumbing technical program.
Examination Structure
Louisiana State Plumbing Board (in-house testing) runs the examination for this credential. Issuance is contingent on passing every part below:
- Louisiana Journeyman Plumber Examination — Louisiana State Plumbing Code — 100 questions, 240 minutes, passing score 70%
- Louisiana Master Plumber Examination — code, design, and business practice — 100 questions, 240 minutes, passing score 70%
Examination fee: $125 per LSPB examination paid at registration.
Retake policy: Failed examinations may be re-taken at the next scheduled LSPB testing date by paying a new $125 fee. There is no annual retake limit but each application remains valid for one year.
Insurance & Financial Security
This credential carries no state-level surety bond requirement under the cited sources. Individual jobs may still trigger a permit or public-works bond, which should be verified before bidding.
General liability
LSPB does not impose a state-level general liability minimum on individual plumber credentials. The LSLBC Plumbing Work contractor license requires standard contractor insurance at the business level.
Workers' compensation
Workers' compensation insurance is mandatory in Louisiana under La. R.S. 23:1031 et seq. for any business with one or more employees, with no small-employer exemption.
Additional financial requirements
No financial statement is required for the individual LSPB Master Plumber credential. The LSLBC Plumbing Work contractor license requires a CPA-reviewed or audited statement showing minimum $10,000 net worth.

Louisiana does not accept the NASCLA Accredited Examination for this classification.
| Reciprocal State | Accepted Exam | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Alabama | Journeyman exam waived | Bilateral LSPB–Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board reciprocity for active master plumbers. |
| Mississippi | Journeyman exam waived | Bilateral LSPB–Mississippi State Board of Contractors reciprocity for active master plumbers. |
| Texas | Journeyman exam waived | Bilateral LSPB–Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners reciprocity for active responsible master plumbers. |
| Arkansas | Journeyman exam waived | Bilateral LSPB–Arkansas Department of Health Plumbing and Natural Gas reciprocity for active master plumbers. |
Reciprocity applies only to the LSPB individual plumber credential. The separate LSLBC Plumbing Work contractor license still requires the Louisiana Business and Law examination.

Step-by-Step Application Roadmap
- Register as an Apprentice Plumber. File with LSPB and begin logging supervised plumbing hours under a Louisiana Master Plumber.
- Complete 5,000 hours of apprenticeship. Approximately four years of full-time supervised plumbing work. Up to 1,000 hours may be earned through an approved plumbing technical program.
- Pass the Journeyman Plumber examination. Score 70% or better on the LSPB Journeyman Plumber examination covering the Louisiana State Plumbing Code.
- Work two years as a Journeyman. Hold the Journeyman Plumber credential and accumulate at least two years of journey-level experience before sitting for the Master examination.
- Pass the Master Plumber examination. Score 70% or better on the LSPB Master Plumber examination covering code, design, and business practice.
- Receive the LSPB Master Plumber credential. LSPB issues the credential after the exam is passed. The credential renews annually.
- Obtain the LSLBC Plumbing Work contractor license. For self-employed plumbing businesses contracting commercial work of $50,000+ or residential of $75,000+, file a separate LSLBC application with the Master Plumber as qualifying party.

Common Filing Mistakes
Drawn from the board instructions and sources cited on this page, the pitfalls below are the ones most likely to slow down or sink a Louisiana Plumber application.
Confusing LSPB and LSLBC
They are different boards with different statutes, applications, and renewal cycles. Self-employed master plumbers typically need credentials from both.
Undocumented apprentice hours
LSPB requires hour logs maintained throughout the apprenticeship. Reconstructing them after the fact rarely succeeds.
Skipping the two-year Journeyman wait
You cannot sit for the Master Plumber examination without at least two years of documented Journeyman experience after passing the Journeyman exam.
Studying the wrong code
Louisiana uses its own State Plumbing Code (LAC Title 51 Part XIV), not the Uniform Plumbing Code or International Plumbing Code. Study the right book.
Letting credentials lapse
LSPB credentials renew annually on December 31. A lapsed Master Plumber credential automatically suspends any LSLBC plumbing contractor license that depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Louisiana have two plumbing regulators?
The Louisiana State Plumbing Board (LSPB) under La. R.S. 37:1361 licenses individual plumbers (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master). The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) under La. R.S. 37:2150 licenses plumbing contracting businesses. A self-employed master plumber typically needs both.
How many hours of apprenticeship does Louisiana require for a Journeyman Plumber?
5,000 hours of supervised plumbing work, approximately four years of full-time employment, under a Louisiana Master Plumber. Up to 1,000 hours may be substituted by completion of an LSPB-approved plumbing technical program.
How long must I work as a Journeyman before I can take the Master Plumber exam?
At least two years of journey-level plumbing experience as a Louisiana Journeyman Plumber before LSPB will allow you to sit for the Master Plumber examination.
Does Louisiana reciprocate plumber credentials?
Yes. LSPB maintains bilateral master plumber reciprocity with Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas. Reciprocity applies only to the individual credential, not the LSLBC contractor license.
How often does the Louisiana Master Plumber credential renew?
Every year. Renewal requires payment of the $125 fee and completion of LSPB-approved continuing education.
