How to Add a California Contractor License Classification

California adds a classification through a separate CSLB application, with a qualifier for the additional scope. Your existing contractor license must be in good standing, and the application is not permission to begin work in the requested classification.

Choose the classification from the work you intend to sell

Read CSLB’s scope definition before choosing a classification code. Its list distinguishes general engineering, general building, residential remodeling, named specialties, and limited specialties. A customer’s project label may include several kinds of work, so write down the actual tasks before selecting the new classification.

For example, installing masonry units and pouring concrete are addressed by separate California classifications. Compare the proposed work with both definitions rather than selecting a code because the material contains concrete. Our concrete and masonry scope comparison develops that example in detail.

Check the existing license and select the qualifier

CSLB accepts an additional classification on a renewed active or inactive license, but not an expired or suspended one. The application requests the existing licensed business name and license number. Only one classification can be requested on an application.

Every classification needs a qualifying individual. The person’s role must fit the business entity: for example, an RME is an employee role, while the available owner, partner, officer, member, or manager roles depend on the entity. Use the application’s role table rather than choosing whichever title is most familiar.

An inactive license’s eligibility for this administrative application should not be confused with authority to perform contracting work. Resolve the license’s working status separately before scheduling jobs.

Prove experience in the additional scope

The qualifier normally needs four years of applicable journey-level, foreman, supervising-employee, or contractor experience within the preceding ten years. Document work in the classification being requested; ownership of a company with another classification does not by itself establish that experience.

Prepare a project-and-employment chronology before asking a certifier to sign. Identify the tasks, dates, role, and person with direct knowledge of the work. Reconcile the chronology with the Certification of Work Experience so the application does not rely on broad statements such as “general construction” when the requested scope is specific.

Examination waivers have their own conditions. CSLB’s waiver guidance includes prior examination and qualifying history, and some waivers are discretionary. Do not assume holding one classification waives examination for every additional trade.

Separate the application fee from the remaining costs

The nonrefundable application fee is $230 for one additional classification. Examination fees are paid separately to CSLB’s approved testing vendor when scheduled. Fingerprinting may also be required; earlier fingerprints for an employer or another regulator do not automatically satisfy CSLB’s process.

Use the current application instructions to check the required signatures, experience certification, personnel disclosures, and any related insurance or bonding changes. If CSLB fingerprints are already available and active on its record, the application explains when they can be used instead of repeating the process.

Track returned paperwork and final issuance

If CSLB returns an insufficient or incomplete application, corrections must be resubmitted within 90 days after its return date. Otherwise the application becomes abandoned and void, requiring a new application and fee. Put that deadline on the calendar when the returned packet arrives.

Keep a copy of the original submission and a list of each correction requested. After approval, verify that the new classification appears on the license record and that the license has the required active status before using it for new work. Paying the fee, receiving an exam appointment, and receiving the classification are different milestones.
