Arizona ROC C-34 / CR-34 Painting Contractor License (2026)

The Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) issues separate residential (C-34 Painting and Wall Covering) and commercial (CR-34 Painting and Wall Covering) classifications under A.R.S. Title 32 Chapter 10. Any painting contracting work valued at $1,000 or more (or that requires a building permit) requires the appropriate ROC license. The qualifying party must demonstrate four years of practical trade experience and pass both the trade examination and the Arizona Statutes and Rules / Business Management examination through PSI. Residential C-34 holders must contribute to the Residential Contractors Recovery Fund.

C-34 / CR-34 Painting and Wall Covering Trade Examination — 80 questions, 200 minutes, passing score 70%

Examination fee: $80 per exam section paid to PSI on the day of testing.

Retake policy: Failed sections may be retaken individually after paying a new $80 fee. Application validity is one year.

Insurance & Financial Security

A contractor license surety bond of $4,250, on the AZ ROC's prescribed form, is a precondition to issuance.

General liability

Arizona ROC does not impose a state GL minimum. Most commercial owners require $1,000,000/$2,000,000.

Workers' compensation is mandatory in Arizona for any business with employees under A.R.S. §23-901 et seq.

Additional financial requirements

C-34 residential contractor bond ranges from $4,250 (under $150,000 in annual volume) to $15,000. CR-34 commercial bond ranges from $5,000 to $100,000 by volume tier.
