Austin Contractor Registration: AB+C Accounts, Authorization, and Activation

By Gabriel Giner · Editorial standards

Austin requires general contractors, trade contractors, and homeowners acting as contractors to register with Building and Trade Contractor Services before construction associated with building and trade permits. A general contractor first needs an Austin Build + Connect account, then the city registration and assignment to the permit.

Prepare the account and authorization before submitting

Create the AB+C account for the general contractor who will be listed on the permit and record the account ID from “My Profile.” Complete the city’s GC registration web form and upload its required Letter of Authorization. After registration, Austin provides a Contractor/Homeowner PIN for future permit requests and activation.

Save the submission confirmation. Austin says the automatic email includes an approximate wait time and asks applicants not to submit duplicate forms. If you need to follow up, use the original submission details so staff can identify the request.

Registration and permit activation are different events

After registration is complete, the GC can activate a building permit approved by residential or commercial plan review, or apply for a qualifying stand-alone permit. Assignment, payment, and activation should be checked on the actual permit record.

For an approved project, organize the work in this order: confirm the registered contractor identity, identify the pending permit, follow the city’s activation instructions, pay the applicable project charges, and confirm that the permit is active before scheduling work against it. Keep the permit number with the approved plans rather than relying on the registration PIN alone.

Austin also offers in-person activation for building permits from approved plan review for registered GCs. Its permit-services page explains the available appointment services and limits, which is useful when an online record needs staff assistance.

Use the trade registration for electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work

Austin distinguishes the GC assigned to the building permit from the contractor assigned to a mechanical, electrical, or plumbing permit. The trade contractor needs the applicable state credential and city registration. The city’s registration instructions require an AB+C ID and Letter of Authorization; additional documents depend on the trade.

For in-person trade registration, Austin tells the contractor to attend with valid state-issued identification and the trade contractor and/or master license. If you manage the project as a GC, identify the actual trade license holder rather than placing every trade under the GC account by default.

Assign responsibility for inspections and completion

Austin assigns the building-permit GC responsibility for activation, payment, approved work, related inspections, final building inspection, the applicable completion or occupancy certificate, and management of child trade permits. Trade contractors have corresponding responsibilities for their own permits and final trade inspections.

Make those roles visible in the project file. A useful handoff record names the building-permit GC, each trade contractor, the relevant permit numbers, and who is scheduling each final inspection. This helps prevent a completed trade installation from being mistaken for a closed building permit.

GC registration does not have the same update cycle as trade registration

Austin says a GC registers once and does not renew annually, but must update changed names, addresses, or agents. Professional trade contractors update their registrations annually and when their state license information changes. Use the city’s update form for license-holder changes, account links, and registration details.

For driveway, sidewalk, or excavation work in the right-of-way, Austin directs applicants to a separate Transportation and Public Works contractor process. Identify that scope before treating an ordinary building-contractor registration as the complete route.
