Maine Low Voltage License Requirements (2026)
By Gabriel Giner, Editor · Reviewed 2026-06-10 · CLR Editorial Review Desk
Maine licenses low-voltage work through the Maine Electricians' Examining Board within the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation under 32 M.R.S.A. Chapter 17. Maine issues a Limited Energy Technician license for installation of fire alarm, burglar alarm, structured cabling, sound, intercom, and similar systems operating at 100 volts or less. The credential is divided into a Limited Energy Apprentice and a Limited Energy Journeyman level, and a separate Master Electrician credential is required to qualify an electrical contracting business. Burglar alarm businesses must additionally register with the Maine Department of Public Safety Bureau of State Police as a private security agency under 32 M.R.S.A. Chapter 93.
Regulatory Body Profile
Maine Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (OPOR) is the statutory authority responsible for issuing and enforcing this license under 10 MRSA Chapter 219-A (Home Construction Contracts); 32 MRSA Chapter 17 (Electricians); 32 MRSA Chapter 49 (Plumbers). OPOR, within the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, houses the Electricians Examining Board and the Plumbers Examining Board. Maine does not license general contractors or HVAC contractors at the state level; the Home Construction Contracts Act regulates residential contracts of $3,000 or more and the Maine Fuel Board licenses oil and solid fuel technicians.

Experience and Education Standards
A minimum of 2 years of 4,000 hours of supervised low-voltage installation experience under a licensed Maine Limited Energy Journeyman or Master Electrician for the journeyman credential must be documented and verified. - W-2 statements, pay stubs, or 1099 records covering the qualifying period

Education substitution
Approved electrical apprenticeships and accredited electronics technology programs substitute for portions of the experience requirement on a sliding scale.
The Exam Syllabus
The exam, administered by PSI Services LLC under contract to the Maine Electricians' Examining Board., breaks into the parts shown below — all must be passed before licensure:
- PSI Maine Limited Energy Technician Examination — NEC, NFPA 72, Maine electrical rules — 80 questions, 240 minutes, passing score 75%

Retake policy: Failed examinations may be re-taken after a 30-day waiting period. Each application remains active for one year.

The Application Roadmap
- Document 4,000 hours of qualifying experience. Compile Electricians' Examining Board Experience Affidavits covering 4,000 hours of supervised limited-energy installation under a Maine-licensed journeyman or master.

Where Applications Stall
The errors below are the ones that most frequently cost Maine Low Voltage applicants time, drawn from the cited board guidance.
Working without supervision as an apprentice
Limited Energy Apprentices may only work under direct supervision of a licensed journeyman. Solo apprentice work triggers Electricians' Examining Board enforcement.
Skipping the State Police registration for burglar alarm
The Limited Energy Journeyman license does not authorize monitored burglar alarm or CCTV. State Police private security registration is required.
Missing the code-update course
Maine requires a code-update course inside the fifteen-hour CE cycle. Generic CE will not satisfy renewal.
Wrong supervisor on the experience affidavit
Experience must be supervised by a Maine-licensed Limited Energy Journeyman or Master Electrician. Out-of-state supervisor signatures are not accepted.
Letting the credential lapse
A lapsed credential may be reinstated within 90 days by paying back fees plus penalty. After 90 days the applicant may be required to re-test.
