Contractor License Cost Calculator

Choose your state, trade, and application pathway. See the recorded government and examination fees, then add your own estimates for insurance, bonding, and preparation.

Your additional budget assumptions

Leave an amount blank if you do not know it. Blank costs are excluded from the subtotal; they are not assumed to be free.

The 1.5% rate is an illustrative assumption, not a quote. Bond face value is security coverage; the premium is your estimated expense. Confirm additional bonds for your entity or qualifier.

How to use this estimate

  1. Choose the pathway that matches your work and business entity. Exempt work, specialty registration, and a general contractor license can have different requirements.
  2. Read the fee guidance and official sources. A missing exam fee stays unknown; it is never silently converted into a free exam.
  3. Enter an insurance quote and the bond amount that applies to your classification. Add an optional preparation budget if useful.
  4. Use the subtotal as a starting budget. Renewal is separate, and costs listed as excluded must be added before treating this as a complete first-year budget.

Why costs differ

Application fees, classification, business structure, exam requirements, insurance, and bond premiums all affect cost. Compare the same scope of work in each state. A state registration and a license requiring examinations are different pathways.

Our state fee comparison uses the same records as this calculator and explains what the numbers include.
